Event Description

You are invited to the continuing "Brown Bag" series, hosted by the library, in partnership with the UNK History Department. Presenters will focus on a different historical topic in each session. Feel free to bring your lunch with you.

In this session, Dr. Lina Homberger Cordia will present "The Road to Title IX and the History of Women's Sports."

When it comes to women's sports, Title IX has become a monumental piece of legislation that punctuates the dark "before" period and separates the "after" as the triumphant victory of pro-equity laws and the solution to equal rights in sports. This, however, is not the whole story. Title IX applies to more than sports, but it also did not achieve its goal to create equal or equitable access to girls' and women — not even fifty years later. This presentation explores examples from the U.S. and abroad that highlight the impact of Title IX around the world, its successes, and its shortcomings. Indeed, the U.S. is not always the leader in gender sports equity, but it does in many ways set the pace, or the standards, for others to follow.
